Review of Lost River (2015) by Bill B — 12 May 2015
Reviews have been harsh, probably for two reasons: One, the critics push a little harder because this is a decidedly indie/weird film directed by an uber-famous actor and, secondly, there's a faction of audience members who've come to this film based on Gosling's mega-movie association and Christina Hendricks' Madmen appeal.
But for those of us who can approach it for what it is-a smart, fun, freaky and hyper-stylized neo-noir labor of love-there's plenty to enjoy. References to Lynch and other stylists are apt, but Gosling brings his own Halloweenish magic to this picture and there are a number of stunning scenes, particularly within the "spook club" where Bones' mother takes up employment.
One of the villains, Bully, is a wonderfully menacing personality and put to great use, and the approach to sound and score in the film is deft, even brilliant. There are a million and one Hollywood blockbusters deserving of a 1-star slam; this adventurous and inventive picture invites multiple views and is, despite its occasionally muddled transitions and slip-ups, an enjoyable and unique experience in its own right.
