Review of Lost in Translation (2003) by Daniela — 23 May 2007
Most who are critical of this movie point to its "lack of a plot" and meandering story as serious faults, and therefore claim they hate it. Yet they've become so used to these substandard, 3 act, plot-twist-filled, muddled messes that Hollywood churns out every year that they can't see the simple and powerful beauty of Lost in Translation.
They're jaded with films, and expect to see actions and consequences, when in fact a lot of LiT is about inaction and restraint: what the two protagonists DON'T say to each other, what they DON'T do together, etc.
These people who bash the film may or may not be of sub-standard intelligence; who knows. But it's clear that they cannot appreciate subtle genius and beauty, and that masterpieces like this and La Dolce Vita would go right over their heads.
