Review of Lost in Translation (2003) by Brian C — 31 Aug 2012
A movie made up of wonderful little moments rather than plot urgency. The resonant themes remain unspoken; cultural alienation, loneliness, random (but platonic) connections between total strangers; it's the kind of film that makes you look at every random person in a crowd and wonder what the chances are that you'll end up striking up a friendship with them.
It's not so much a story as it is a glimpse into a mindset. It may bore the hell out of many viewers, but if the details click, it's likely to be remembered as one of the more beautiful and mesmerizing films of last decade.
