Review of Lost in Translation (2003) by Thomas H — 04 Mar 2013
Possibly the closest to perfect I have ever seen. Lost in Translation dishes out supreme drama and charismatic touch and go romance between the two main characters whilst throwing them into a culture where very little relates to the world's they originate from. Sofia Coppola really strikes the viewers hearts with the old, worn-down and bored Bob Harris accompanying the fresh and mislead Charlotte when the former is brought to this new world to advertise whiskey and the latter led through by her new and overambitious husband. Both actors portray their characters with such grace, drama and subtle amusement, wondering such a weird and blinding new landscape, using their hotel as home base. The ending really appeals to the more sensitive viewers side, with the whisper that makes us all ask the inevitable question "What did he say?".
With all this in mind, especially including Bill Murray's serious role with occasional and very well placed humor, alongside Scarlett Johanson's lesser known acting talent and obvious brilliance, Sofia Coppola creates a wonder enchanting film that sits proudly on top of my "Greatest Films of All Time" as Number 1.
