Review of Lost Horizon (1937) by Nick D — 08 Feb 2009
Anyone with a curiosity of the world and and a passion for Shangri- La in their hearts will not be helped but swept away but this grand vision. I didn't even realize until a just last year that Frank Capra Directed this! Unlike anything else he ever did, but brilliant just the same.
Sure the message might come across as a bit old fashioned, but you must remember that this was made while on the cusp of WWII, and the fear of world war was has big a threat as Nuclear war today. But the great thing about the movie is not the that they are escaping to a better place, that is merely the setup, but rather that Colman Hawking decides to return to the imperfect world form which he escaped.
Just take a look at the close up on his face as looks back and Shangri-La for what maybe the last time, and tell me its not on the best closeups in the history of movies.
