Review of Lost Horizon (1937) by Isaac J — 07 Aug 2009
Narratively, the film is as much a waiting game as TV's "Lost": the characters relax into their new-found surrounds, and discover the years dropping off them, while we viewers attend the great revelation that will explain where it is we actually find ourselves, and how it is we got there in the first place.
Is it a dream? The dream of the dead and dying? The finale has it every which way. Capra would go on to make better films, and films that were more straightforward in what they had to say about society, but this is the strangest entry on his filmography, and the one that leaves most questions unanswered - very clearly a bulletin from a world heading into uncertain territory.
