Review of Lost Highway (1997) by Jakob...with A K — 10 May 2009
My favourite David Lynch movie is one of his least popular films. While the inclusion of an industrial metal soundtrack, rockstar cameos and some occasional music-video-esq editing suggest to some that Lynch sold out, for me this was merely him experimenting with a new style and I think for this film it works.
It is his first truly surrealist film since Eraserhead, with a non-linear plot (and non linear time), it is a perfect mix of physical manifestations of unconscious associations and emotions in a dinstinctly american setting.
The film explores the familiar themes of jealously, madness and family which occur throughout his work, but places it in a stylish and occasionally hyperviolent setting with great music. In my opinion, Mulholland Drive is Lynch's masterpiece, but Lost Highway is his most entertaining film, and is a fun, cool, complex piece of cinema.
