Review of Lost Highway (1997) by Annelies S — 30 Nov 2009
Like watching a nightmare. Atmospheric, suspenseful and sexy.
After the film's initial opening segment, the lines between reality and fantasy become somewhat blurred, creating a feeling that I can only describe as dreamlike, in the way, like in a dream, things don't always seem to make sense or fit together which is entirely typical of Lynch.
It's done with a visual flair that's to be expected from a David Lynch film, especially the the brooding opening 40 or so minutes. It also has appropriately fitting soundtrack, that combined with the story and visuals provokes an unsettling feeling that lodges in your gut and doesn't let go throughout it's entire duration.
Is Lost Highway self indulgent nonsense or clever mind bending magnificence? I only know that I cannot comprehend what I have just seen, and nor do I feel the need to do so. I thoroughly enjoyed the ride.
