Review of Lost for Words (1999) by Private U — 25 Mar 2008
Two themes nobody wants to confront in real life ? ageing, and dementia. Now imagine it?s your *own* mother or grandmother who becomes thus stricken. Fantastic performances that only the British can turn out: Pete Postlethwaite and Dame Thora Hird transcend the original book of Deric Longden.
Throughout the movie, you?re on the verge of breaking out in laughter one moment (Thora always comes across as a lovable ?little old lady?); then, tears, the next. For those who have cared for elderly or dementia afflicted relatives, it is what it is.
And it?s very candidly presented here. Highly recommended viewing.
