Review of Lost Boys: The Thirst (2010) by Nathan N — 28 Aug 2011
Despite the poor reception of Lost Boys 2: The Tribe, Corey Feldman is back as Edgar Frog in Lost Boys: The Thirst.
On the plus side, The Thirst actually feels like a sequel, which can't be said for its predecessor. The fanged fiends we are presented with are far more interesting than the surfing loudmouths of The Tribe. Jamison Newlander returns to action this time, once again portraying Alan Frog who has since become a vampire himself, as alluded to in the previous film.
To no surprise, the Twilight series is not safe from criticism as we are given an author character, who's books the Edward Cullen chronicles are the obvious inspiration of. We're also treated to a reality television star who comes along for the ride, most likely winking at the Ghost Hunters series. Still, doing so doesn't have the same effect when your film doesn't see a second of theater time.
Unlike many horror series, the conclusion actually has a feeling of closure to it. While the finale doesn't nearly have a payoff as nice as the original film, the final nail in the coffin is rather satisfying. All seems well, until they take the cliche route of a cliffhanging final shot, rather than staking the series through the heart once and for all. Nevertheless, I think this will be the last we see of the Frog Brothers and their zany, gore-filled misadventures. That is, of course, until Hollywood decides to pull that inevitable reboot switch.
Lost Boys: The Thirst is considerably better than the previous straight-to-video sequel. However, it still leaves you with the bewilderment of why it was even given a green light in the first place. Either way, if you are a fan of the original '80s flick, Corey Feldman is sure to put a smile on your face at least once throughout this apparently final Lost Boys debacle.
