Skillfully made and thematically packing a punch, "Lord of War"s real weakness is an engaging story. The plot arches from the 1980s through the early 2000s (did Nicholas Cage even age that much?) as an arm dealer services his clients.
The film is passionately cynical and leaves the lead character doing what he does because he is good at it. We see him doing business, trying to get out of the arms dealing, and destroying what family he has but we don't really care all that much.
Scriptwriter Andrew Niccol can't find a way to end this film either. However, opening sequence is pretty impressive.
