Review of Lord of the Flies (1963) by Christopher B — 05 Mar 2013
Raw, minimalist black & white indie film shot in Puerto Rico. Moral?; when crowds in stressful situations have no civilized leadership, chaos and riots are not only likely, but deadly! Here's a good description from TCM's Ben Mankiewicz: "Director Peter Brook took a totally offbeat approach to making the film; shooting it on location with an unknown cast - and virtually no script.
Brook just used the novel as his point of reference - telling the boys what needed to happen in each scene. He shot it all in gritty black & white. As a result the movie often feels quite real, sometimes alarmingly real, almost like a documentary - and when you see what happens to these kids, and among these kids, the style adds a disturbing authenticity to the movie.
