Review of Lord of the Flies (1963) by The Critic ( — 02 Oct 2012
Based on William Golding's novel, the premise behind 'Lord of the Flies' is indeed an interesting one, with universal themes of government, social and cultural politics, and power, but the pace is often sluggish, a reflection of the source material rather than Peter Brook's competent direction.
Of the cast, James Aubrey (as good guy Ralph) shows the most promise, with Tom Chapin solid as Jack, Tom Gaman delivers a haunting spell as Simon, and Hugh Edwards approaches Piggy with much sympathy.
Interesting to compare with the critically panned though altogether superior 1990 American remake by Harry Hook.
