Review of Looper (2012) by Andrzej S — 15 Oct 2014
I really wanted to like this movie. Time assassins, Bruce Willis... the potential was great. But the delivery was so childishly simplistic, it made it difficult to watch in one sitting. The script sounds like it was written by a 12 year old.
This movie throws "show, don't tell" into the garbage, then pours gasoline inside and sets the pathetic remains of any subtilty on fire. The first 30 minutes is almost unwatchable due to this boneheaded narration.
"He is assassin. He kill people from future. Cool," and that is only a slight exaggeration. The script makes all the acting flat and unbelievable. Where a movie like "The Fifth Element" could pull this almost comedic unrealism off due to a tight script and great directing, Looper just falls flat on its face.
This film's saving grace was the ending, where we actually got some interesting time travel & alternative universe style story telling. The rest of the movie can be summarized when Bruce Willis' character is asked how time travel works: "It doesn't matter!" he yells "It does't matter!".
