Review of Looper (2012) by Tazio G — 17 Aug 2015
Joe: We both know how this has to go down, so why don't you do what old men do and die.
Older Joe: Why don't you take that little gun out from between your legs and do it, boy.
"Face your future. Fight your past.".
The most original and inventive Sci-Fi flick since Blade Runner. Rian Johnson has created a classic for years to come. I haven't seen any movies from him besides this, but he definitely has a knack for filmmaking. The concept of time travel in the future in Looper is intelligently well done and explained with realism. It may be confusing for some people in the complex plot presented here, but with attentive detail listening to the dialogue for example, you'll get it. Rian Johnson doesn't want to spend a whole hour explaining how it functions. There's only so much we can try to argue about with very little knowledge of time travel itself and physics playing a role in it. How the mob makes use of time travel, the Looper's job descriptions, and certain actions changing the present/future is all explained. There are plenty of twists and turns throughout the movie and more to it besides one guy trying to kill himself, which turns out to be a pretty dark meaningful journey. With a really cool plot, Rian Johnson also has a slick gritty vision of retro-future Kansas in 2044, raw action, and a heck of a cast lead by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis. Both of these guys have been on fire with so many movies lately and prove here why they're highly sought for actors. Joseph Gordon-Levitt has solidified his future and he's simply awesome as a Looper. The way he plays as an assassin with intelligence and stubbornness is hard not to like. His impersonation of Bruce Willis is also dead on with all the prosthetics and makeup on him and has that cool slyness to him like Willis. Bruce Willis gives an excellent performance and easily his best role in years. Still a top dog with old age and a bald head. These two guys are supported by Jeff Daniels, Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Piper Perago, and Noah Segan. They are all exceptional especially the little boy Pierce Gagnon. Where did he come from? I don't know. His performance is arguably the best one in the movie. Enough said. I loved every minute of Looper. The movie is different and creative unlike most today. It met my expectations and was even better than I thought it was going to be. Looper is one of the best Sci-Fi flicks created with clever direction, a mind-bending plot, solid action, glamorous special effects/cinematography, and all around performances.
