Review of Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003) by Gerry P — 16 Oct 2012
Although it's true to the Looney Tunes than Space Jam, Back in Action is not perfect. The biggest problem is the pacing. IT'S TOO FAST! Most comedies know when to stop, take a breath or sometime have no dialogue to make a joke work. But no, this film throws every joke all at the same time at once instead waiting for the first joke to end and another waiting for it's turn. It never shuts up and never slows down so much, you'll be expecting your DVD player to explode.
Another problem I have is Jenna Elfman. Why is she so bad in this film? And I mean REALLY bad. Steve Martin........ I dunno. He was probably overacting on purpose for the sake of comedy......... I'm sorry. It's just not his best work. He's a great actor but in this film..........
Another scene I hate is when the characters unzip them themselves to reveal that they're other characters. It's a pointless and unfunny scene. Why did they film it? I guess Joe Dante just wanted to direct the film and get out of here and let someone else edit the film without knowing what the style was.
As for the Area 52 scene, it just makes you feel like you're watching a different film. The aliens might be too scary for kids.
Also, the scene where Taz eats Ron Perlman's character and there's just his skeleton left, that's not funny. It's just disturbing. It's not gory, but it's just not the type of thing you'd see in a family film.
The animation and special effects are great. I love seeing the other Looney Tunes characters on other places of the world and Brendan Fraser is watchable.
Looney Tunes and movies just don't mix very well. Maybe some day we'll have a really good Looney Tunes movie that doesn't involve live action. There are too many films trying to attempt what Who Framed Roger Rabbit did, but you just can't top Roger Rabbit. It's like trying to make a film better then The Wizard of Oz.
Overall, it's just okay.
