Review of Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977) by Adam P — 13 Aug 2008
The messages in this one are all over the place, but really that's what keeps it so fascinating. It seems to make many simplistic statements about women's liberation, religion, abuse, sexuality, and yet complicates that time and again with its sympathetic, flawed lead character and vicious outcome.
That ending is one of the most disturbing I've seen, and even worse since you know the film was going there once she was given that strobe light. I felt strong echoes of 'Fire Walk With Me' in this one.
Diane Keaton is fantastic as always and Richard Gere is VERY memorable for doing push ups and knife fighting in a jock strap. Worth replay for that alone but the themes are worth dissecting as well.
