Review of Looking for Eric (2009) by Jamie W — 13 Jun 2009
Saw this movie today... fantastic!!! Ken Loach has not only kept in touch with his ability to command Social Realist filmmaking but to also experiment with flashbacks, a make-believe Eric Cantano and a wide variety of music, he has created what should go down in history as the benchmark for British Films. He has even proven that he knows British films by using a football theme coupled together with universal themes of life, love, friendship and the ability to become a better person.
If Ken Loach's film does not win a 2010 Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director or Best Actor In A Leading Role I am going to lose my faith in the Academy and filmmaking... Also I hope it takes the Palme d'Or at Cannes this year like Ken Loaches previous film "The Wind That Shakes The Barley" (2006).
I was the only one at the cinema today that saw the film... the whole screen 8 by myself... and I left last because not since "Billy Elliot" (2000, dir. Stephen Daldry) have I been this passionate and touched by such a British film.
