Ken loach IMO has always been a director who sometimes was simplifying things a bit too much. when he's telling political tales, he can be poignant by using this tactic, but "looking for eric" has an inherent lightness, and thus doesn't benefit from loach's one-sided approach.
cantona's "deus ex machina"-characer was a bit annoying, but steve evets (palindrome ahoy!) was fantastic and saved this movie single-handedly.
