Review of Look at Me (2004) by Clara B — 22 Jul 2007
This has everything: a brilliant, charismatic cast; a script that manages to be both cutting and humorous; an emotional core driven by painfully real (if not always likeable) characters; and complex, chemistry-fuelled relationships that deepen as the movie progresses.
Bacri is outstanding as the narcissistic writer and father, but Berry shines equally as his neglected but in some ways equally self-obsessed teenage daughter. Unlike "Amelie", which panders self-consciously to the preconceptions of non-French (namely US) audiences, this movie succeeds on its own terms, managing to be by turns wry, witty, subtle and sincere.
