Review of Lonesome Jim (2005) by Peter R — 01 Feb 2010
A slow paced indie gem set in small town America, this character study of a miserable and self obsessed man is a chance to see that Casey Affleck is one of the greatest actors around. Arrogant and selfish but with enough depth that he still manages to come across as likeable and endearing.
The way he treats people is pretty awful too, this especially true of the way he talks to his mother. There is no doubt that this is a special film full of quirks and funny side plots and it's a shame the running time is so short.
The basketball sub plot is one such side story that is especially funny and heart warming. All in all this is practically faultless film making by Buscemi which shows what can be done with a tiny budget.
