Review of Lonely Hearts (2006) by Edite Q — 20 Dec 2007
This is a movie about a real life couple (Ray Fernandez and Martha Beck) who put ads in the local papers to attract rich women to fall for Ray and then killed them to take their money. I saw a 1970 classic about them, 'The Honeymoon Killers', and I was very curious about this version .
.. now I'm a bit disappointed at the artistic liberties of the director. Supposable, Martha Beck was not only an American but also an overweight and very unappealing person. The actress that brings her to life - Salma Hayek - is Hispanic, has a strong accent and has the looks of a top model.
.. Besides, although it is visually interesting and captures the spirit of the 1940s, the movie is much too concerned about the inner dilemmas of the character of the cop who is trying to capture the two lovers (which is understandable, once the director is the grandson of Elmer C.
Robinson, the cop responsible for the arrest of the killers). Travolta does a nice job has the obsessed cop, but Hayek and Leto have very little chemistry and they are much too attractive for the roles to be convincing.
