Review of Lone Survivor (2013) by Philip R — 17 Aug 2014
Though the trailers looked promising and set hopes high that it would be an action packed thriller with incredible acting the final product is a film that is muddled in incredibly loud, over the top action scenes, and gore that is not for the faint at heart.
The screenplay needed rewriting alongside with the strengthening of character development. The film starts out with us observing these characters before their mission but there was not much to them except for the usual, cliché military hijinks.
The editing was distracting and too fast and in the latter part the film relies mostly on over the top war violence. Though this is a war movie, there have been countless other war movies that gets its message across without making us throw up our popcorn.
There were some good moments in it, however. Mark Wahlberg was the greatest thing about the film. The biggest downfall about this film is that it leads itself to be compared to a great film. The film is "Saving Private Ryan" which was a much better war film and probably the best.
For a film as ambitious to compare itself in the trailer to arguably the best war film of all time is so ambitious that it ultimately fails. This film was a complete disappointment.
