Review of London Boulevard (2010) by Joe A — 07 Dec 2013
London Boulevard is one of those movies that is trying so hard to be hip and cool, that it forgets to be interesting or entertaining. Colin Farrell is Mitchel, an ex-con who wants to go straight but, as in all cliche' stories like this, they keep pulling him back in.
He even gets a legit job with a pretty but, eccentric actress, Charlotte (Keira Knightley, whom he of course falls in love with.) but, the criminal element seems determined to have Mitchel back in the fold.
Director/writer William Monahan seems to think that the key to a cool, hip English crime thriller is to pack as many cool, hip songs as possible onto the soundtrack and then have all his characters chain smoke and call each other "cunt" as much as possible.
And if the situation doesn't evoke "cunt" then "fuck off" will do. But, he seems to forget that those foul mouthed, niccotine addicted characters need more then that to be interesting and they need to be in an interesting story to be entertaining.
And this "bloody cunt" doesn't provide us with either.
