Review of Lola Montès (1955) by Art S — 09 Oct 2011
The circus scenes here are incredible -- who imagines a circus experience based on the life of a "fallen woman"? Are there kids at this circus? Max Ophuls adds a painter's eye for color to his talent with the moving camera and pictorial angle.
Martine Carol is like a black hole sucking up any vibrancy that surrounds her into a world weary stillness (despite being prodded across the tightrope). In flashback, we see how she got this way (and are dazzled by set design).
