Review of Logan's Run (1976) by Aaron R — 13 Feb 2008
I used to see this movie all the time on TNT back when it ran old and/or B grade movies back in the 1980s and early 1990s. I finally got to finish it recently, and somehow it happens to be great, mostly due to its very distinctive visual style (part of what I call "retro sci-fi", that is, how people in the past saw the future and how this concept makes something seem futuristic and dated at the same time) that brings to mind other late 70s/early 80s stuff like "Escape from New York", "Krull", "Tron", "Battlestar Galactica", and "Flash Gordon".
It's still an interesting social commentary, and isn't all that different from "The Matrix" if you think about it (people discovering the outside world after living in a sheltered reality).
People may be amused at "Logan's Run"'s vintage stylings (I vaguely remember when people used to dress like that), but one day, "The Matrix" and "Underworld", with its gothy cyberpunk style, will look just as silly.
A great film that was ahead of its time technologically, with a plot that never slows down, even though its dramatic stylings are a bit old school (think melodrama in the vein of James Mason, Lawrence Olivier, or Alec Guinness).
Recommended.
