Review of Logan's Run (1976) by Bryan E — 05 Sep 2010
A classic sci-fi treat, thats more reminiscent of something you would see today, then back in the 70's.
The Good:
This film was way ahead of it's time! The plot for the movie is truly fantastic. It's set in a post-apocolyptic future, and deals with BIG moral, and ethical issues. The journey our two heroes take is truly a remarkable and well told one! This is definitely one of those movies I can view several times.
I'll admit when it comes to the visuals department the movie is a mixed bag. Most of the time the sets and special effects are top notch! The whole movie really gives out a unique and interesting perspective of the future. For the most part the visuals where truly remarkable and add to the film!
The Bad:
The acting is definitely NOT the best. The actors do get the job done and never bring the movie down, however they do not really add to it either. Give this movie two talented leads and this would be one of the greatest sci-fi movies of ALL time!
As I mentioned earlier, the visuals are a mixed bag. I say this because there are times where the sets and special effects are literally laughable! Making small models look life size on screen is truly an art we take for granted. It seems the team behind Logan's Run didn't quite have the science figured out yet. The beginning shot of the city is clearly a very small model and is almost laughable. This is sad because it definitely distances you from the movie. It starts and you already feel it's fake, which can have a big effect on your entire experience.
Overall:
Classic, vintage sci-fi with a story that is way ahead of it's time! While there are some cheap looking effects for the most part the visuals are top notch and really add to the film. The performances aren't great but get the job done and the story more then makes up for the actors short comings. SEE. IT.
