Review of Lockout (2012) by Cody M — 17 Nov 2012
Extremely uneven sci-fi actioner that has a rogue CIA agent Snow (Guy Pearce) being forced to breach an orbital prison to rescue the president's daughter (professional hostage Maggie Grace from Taken) after the prison's cryo-frozen inmates break free.
Co-written by Luc Bisson, the movie's derivative premise gets enough mileage out of the space prison idea that it could have made a decent shoot-em-up, and Pearce is amusing as the dickish hero. However for every good idea or competent action sequence, there are a dozen scenes of complete stupidity (including Grace's bodyguard committing suicide to "conserve air") that it jars you out of the movie.
The resolution, dealing with a silly MacGuffin that the directors seems to care more about than the hostages in orbit, just makes you shake your head in disbelief. With a better script, this could have been something.
