Review of Locke (2014) by Marilena G — 19 Aug 2014
I really do have a soft spot for films all set in one place with one actor mainly. This film sits firmly in between my two other favorite films with the same concept; 'Buried' and '127 Hours.
' Unfortunately, the director doesn't trust his audience enough to be entertained perfectly by just Hardy's excellent performance. I had the same EXACT problem with '127 Hours.' There's a lot of substance and pain there, but we're constantly distracted by fancy shots of things so maybe their audience will forget that they're 'bored' because the film has literally been in the same location, per say.
It has the gravitas of the former, 'Buried,' but not the patience a character study like this needs. It works better than '127 Hours' because the writing and acting was phenomenal (James Franco is top notch in '127 Hours' but could've been a real contender if was done by a more thoughtful director.
) But not as great as 'Buried,' because that film only used fancy camera work to actually build upon an emotion the character was already portraying, to amplify it on artistic merit. 'Locke' & '127 Hours' are ALWAYS moving and I'm sorry, but that didn't sit well for me.
Took away from the performance and the wonderful script. Even though I have a lot of comparison and complaining to do about these types of films, I still enjoyed it immensely. I just hate seeing what it could've been.
It breaks my heart. Oscar worthy performance from Hardy. Best BMW commercial I've ever seen.
