Review of Locke (2014) by Dylan P — 14 Sep 2014
Tom Hardy, what can I say. The dude is amazing. Having a film set in one location like Buried and Brake, the claustrophobia is what drove those two films. The desperation of Ryan Reynolds and Stephen Dorff in those two films are what drove those stories.
And just like 127 Hours, the fear of death is what creates suspense and allows the audience to sit there and basically watch one man do one thing in one location for 90 minutes. Locke doesn't really have that hanging over it.
It's just a man dealing with normal man problems. Dealing with his wife and kids, the woman he has a one night stand with who is now pregnant with his baby and huge construction project that he is foreman of.
The resolutions of each plot point is irrelevant, what is relevant is the commanding performance Tom Hardy gives. This guy is that once in a generation actors, he can do anything. He is like Daniel Day Lewis, even in movies that are quite as good as they should be, he shines as a bright shiny quarter on the day in the arcade when you can only find pennies.
Arcades are where us old guys used to play Video Games. Tom Hardy Rules.
