Review of Locke (2014) by Sandy K — 04 Jan 2015
The entire film is told as Ivan Locke - a successful and respected construction foreman - fields phone calls (and talks to himself) on a long drive to London the night before a huge concrete pour on an important job.
In many ways it's very well done, with striking camera angles with nighttime light reflections through the car windows as we watch his perfect personal and professional life unraveling. The story challenges us to consider what it means to be a "good" person - to do the right thing.
And Tom Hardy carries the part brilliantly - no small feat for what is essentially a solo performance, with only disembodied voices on the phone for him to play against as an actor. But my construction-superintendent husband watching with me scoffed at the notion that the night before such a huge concrete pour there would be so many things left on Ivan's check list.
It adds nicely to the crescendo of stressors he faces on the long drive, but these were all things that would have been thoroughly prepared, inspected, and approved days before such a concrete pour in the real world.
