Review of Locke (2014) by Kallum S — 15 Jul 2015
Shown from just the perspective of driver, Ivan Locke, as he rides into the night on the biggest job of his career, Steven Knight's simple, engrossing car journey is nothing more than one man driving, and with every phone call that takes place, Locke's life is falling apart.
Hardy's performance is the key, with career and family all on the line, the entire film feels closed in and claustrophobic, no where to go. Having to experience the next moment of what seems like the worst night of his life is utterly tense to watch. Locke's growing frustration fuels a sense of hatred and resentment towards his father, who he is trying so hard not to become.
Truly, I find that I pulled more emotion, intrigue and human interaction from Knight's script than I have from films with casts boasting ten plus.
You'll be glued from start to finish.
