Review of Locke (2014) by Dorothy M — 13 Sep 2015
A film that is truly literary in its ambitions. "Locke" is a powerhouse of a film that places the focus squarely on one man, Ivan Locke, and the consequences of his past mistakes and explores how, in one drive, these mistakes come crashing down around him and Ivan's attempts to right his own wrongs.
Tom Hardy lends a magnificent performance as an essentially one man show, bringing emotional poignancy and complexity to Ivan. Ivan is achingly human, a flawed man who made terrible mistakes but is trying to do the right thing to correct those mistakes as well as outstrip his own hauntings that crippled him.
The brilliant screenplay by Steven Knight questions the extent to which human beings can repair the damage of their own choices and never feels gimmicky, presenting a tour de force of emotion and introspection.
A must-watch.
