Review of Locke (2014) by Laurence S — 29 Sep 2015
Locke, starring one of my favourite actors, Tom Hardy. The story goes with Ivan Locke as he drives the long highway all the way to his destination alongside his fu*ked up life. Well, I said it's fu*ked up because, he has work to do and he talks to his assistant about a work (he is an engineer) that is not yet finished, a girl he slept with is now giving birth and his wife found out about it but he's children do not, LIFE, RIGHT? I just want to praise good old Tom for giving an exceptional performance.
Well, a lot of people will say that this film is boring because the setting is only at his car all throughout the film and he faces all his problems over a car phone. Now this is where Hardy's acting skills are put to test.
The camera only focuses to him, the whole time and that's how you see every emotion he puts in every dialogue to another person on the phone. What a performance from the supporting cast as well, because taking to consideration acting with just their voices and you can still feel the emotion as if you can almost see them in your imagination.
All throughout, the events that are happening in the film are representing Ivan Locke's life. Like his job, there is one scene from the film where Ivan talks about one single mistake in the materials and the whole building could collapse.
That also goes in his life and his challenges that he is facing in the film, one decision and it could really mess up his whole damn life. I also love his conversation with his son. His son is talking to him about forgetting all the things that happened and then continue their life.
Still at the end of the film, he saw his DESTINATION (in life) which is to see his new born child. That moment, talking to his son and going to see his new born baby, tells about how his children keeps him strong in every uphill battle that he face in his life.
Overall, Locke is such an interesting take on a life of a person in one cohesive plot in just a single setting which is a car and also a perfect performance of the actors especially Hardy on this one.
