Review of Locke (2014) by Richard H — 03 Feb 2015
I thought Locke was a surprisingly good movie. Tom Hardy's character (Ivan Locke) is a very calm, resourceful man, who seems to be trying hard to do the right thing. The entire movie, that is filmed in Locke's BMW, starts with him taking a left, instead of a right, on his way home.
The reason for the change of route unfolds as Locke, a construction supervisor, starts making calls from his car phone. While trying to ensure the completion of a large delivery of wet concrete with an almost obsessive commitment, the viewer is drip-fed more and more information, and the reason for Locke's journey becomes clearer.
Considering the entire movie consists of Locke juggling calls on his car phone, with the occasional one way conversation with his father whom he despises, and is an imaginary backseat passenger, the movie never becomes uninteresting.
Hardy's performance is very good, and once again shows his versatility as actor.
