It may be little more than a gimmick, but writer director Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) manages to create a taught, immersive thriller to rival any recent cinematic venture by following one man in a car for an hour and a half as his life begins to unravel over a set of phone calls.

The most important aspect to any film of this kind of course relies on the actor themselves, and in having Tom Hardy (tricked out in a welsh accent) a presence who could simply watch paint dry seem heart pounding, brings an interesting experiment into the realm of the perfect showcase on how acting is indeed an art form.

Trying desperately to keep it together as his world of work, in this case concrete, and family (ably voiced by Ruth Wilson and young Bill Miner) comes crashing down at an alarming rate as he drives to solve a mistake he desperately regrets.

Hardy is well known as a physical actor of hulking presence and quiet rage which have infused most of his film work, but it's here as Ivan Locke reaches emotional breaking point that he comes really into his own.

...and it must be said, for the first time in years to label an an actor the British Brando does not seem far fetched at all.
