Review of Locke (2014) by Aaron P — 31 May 2016
Who would have thought a movie based around a man sitting in a car for 85 minutes would be so compelling. Locke demonstrates that powerful film making can exist with a simple premise. Tom Hardy plays a man struggling to manage his work, family, and past mistakes through a series of phone calls as he drives through the night to atone for a personal mistake.
Tom Hardy is exceptional as Ivan Locke and uses his 85 minutes on screen as a personal showcase for his skill as an actor. Locke may not fit the stereotypical thriller, forgoing the usual impending threat for a much more psychological approach.
The tension comes as the viewer is drawn deeper into the psyche of this man as he tries ever harder to keep every facet of his world from unraveling. The result is an emotional thriller that is driven by a compelling lead performance.
