Review of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) by Jamie T — 04 Nov 2010
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is Guy Ritchie(Snatch, Sherlock Holmes) first movie, also being Jason Stathoms first movie. Its plotline is way too complicated to explain, but it is basically about the london underground crime scene, and how four friends need to find a way to get 500 grand in a week.
There are many good things about this movie. First, I greatly appreciated Guy Ritchies brilliant direction, having almost impossible tracking shots that basically movie with the characters in the movie. Trust me, you will be surprised. Second, it has very interesting characters who are just fun to watch talk and do stuff even if you can't follow what the hell they are saying. They are definitely interesting characters in this movie that are much more unique and likable than the people in many other movies. Third, it definitely succeeds in spoofing crime movies, having ridiculous twists and characters doing stupid things that are so over the top that it is hilarious. Fourth, it has a funny and smart script by Guy Ritchie that mixes verbal humor with gags very well, which really defines it as a good comedy. Finally, it works as a good crime movie while spoofing it, a feat that only few movies have done, including Shaun of the Dead.
The only problem I had with this movie was the fact that it is pretty confusing for the most part, and the british accents don't really help at all.
Overall, this is a really fun, exciting, hilarious ride that is definitely worth watching.
