Review of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) by Jerome K — 11 Nov 2011
Before Guy Ritchie became known for being Mr. Madonna, he actually gained recognition from directing this film, and then later on, Snatch. Although it's been awhile since I've seen Snatch, you can tell this movie was done by the same person, because both stylistically and content wise, they're very similar.
It's even similar to Layer Cake, which is by Matthew Vaughan, who coincidentally produced this movie. Why am I bringing this up? Well, it seems like they're all somewhat the same movie. They're all violent comedies about the British underworld that revolve around multiple characters that get in way over their heads.
In fact, all three seem to share a number of the same actors. However, with that being said, you can't say Lock, Stock was just another one of those films, because this one came out years before the other two.
The script was very witty, the characters in this film were very likeable, and there were pretty good performances throughout. Obviously, if you're a fan of the 2 movies I've mentioned earlier, you'll like Lock, Stock, and Smoking Barrels.
