Review of Local Hero (1983) by Alyssa C — 05 Jul 2008
Forsyth's follow up to Gregory's Girl keeps that film's charm and humour, while wrapping a better, larger story around it's perfectly rounded characters.the remote setting is spellbinding, while Knopfler's now iconic score allows the film to rise above any of the relatively small amount of schmaltz.
Lancaster and Reigert are perfectly cast as the outsiders charmed by the Scottish Hamlet, while Dennis Lawson and Peter Capaldi lead a pack of great Scot Character actors, all brought to life with thier own quirks.
Like a modern(well,in 1983 anyway)Whisky Galore,the film still orks today,both warm and bittersweet.They don't make films like this anymore.
