Review of Local Hero (1983) by Adam B — 21 Jul 2008
A very genteel comedy, one that you might expect from the 50's rather than the 80s, but enjoyable nonetheless. It reminded me of some of the great Powell/Pressberger films, like 'I Know Where I'm Going' and 'The Edge of the World'.
Burt Lancaster is really good as the nutty oil executive who sends Peter Riegert out to Scotland to buy up land in the local village. Riegert eventually begins to love the village and wishes he could stay.
Its quite whimsical, but the pace is smooth and well directed, perfect Sunday afternoon fodder.
