Review of Local Hero (1983) by Bevan S — 28 Jun 2009
It never occurred to me that the profundity of this movie would grow with the decades, but 20 years later it really says a lot more than it ever did. At the time, it seemed purely about leaving work behind, but now - in an era filled with cell phones and constant internet - it's reminder about checking out from your own life, stopping the constant chatter, and taking some moments for isolation and quiet and contemplation and discovery.
Being out of touch and without a tether to what you know. It's an important little film that disposes of all the awful dramatic cliches that Hollywood spent decades building up in order to just say something plainly and charmingly and offer something through showing and doing rather than telling.
Lovely achievement.
