Review of Living in Oblivion (1995) by Teddy P — 22 Nov 2007
One thing I love is movies that talk about making movies, from "Otto e mezzo" to "La nuit américaine" I find it completely fascinating, the camera and the scenario investigating themselves and exposing their structures.
Nevertheless, this concept film by Tom Di Cillo falls short of what makes a great movie-about-movies: a sense of purpose, a real sense of soul searching. What we have here is 3 hilarious yet stressful scenes that lead nowhere but to the end credits.
Perhaps this is the aim of the film, to show the value of cinema by exposing the fact that it's just cinema and that it doesn't have to be more than that... I was hoping for a bit more but it's still an attaching little indie film and Steve Buscemi is fantastic as usual.
