Review of Living in Oblivion (1995) by Michael Y — 26 Jan 2011
Don't let this extremely low budget movie fool you. With great preformances from it's cast, Living in Oblivion will make you laugh hard at it's intelligent and dark humour.
Indeed the life of the average filmmaker has many worries, on and off the set. Living in Oblivion is about the cast and crew of an independent film who are completely disfunctional as personal and professional problems keep them away from completing ONLY ONE SCENE! This is a movie that has many unexpected twist and turnes that show an incredably creative view on filmmaking and the concept of perfection. But the best thing about this movie is the writing and the preformances that drive the lines perfectly. Steve Buscemi plays the director trying to finnish the shot the best he can, but there's so many annoying and aggravating things happening, it'll make you just as angry as the director is.
Like I said, this movie is EXTREMELY low budget. The filming locations and the style are pretty basic. But that's ok because this is, afterall, a movie about the art of filmmaking, and not only that, but making a small movie. It's this direction to make a story about the basics of filmmaking and filming it basically that's creative, appealing, and appropriate. But while you're watching this movie, you'll definitely appreciate that shots more and think about how this movie was made.
This is a very funny movie about annoying people in the most stressful situation possible. And with some excelent delivery from the cast, you'll squirm, yell at the tv, and laugh till it hurts. When a movie can be that effective, you know it's good.
