Review of Live Free or Die Hard (2007) by Chris B — 16 Jan 2013
Poeple think the 80s were cheesy, well wait'll you get a load o' Die Hard 4 starring Bruce Willis as action hero Bruce Willis -- Jon McClane the policeman this is not. It's Bruce Willis, Action Hero.
The camera work is as good as the rest, and so is the pacing and story. What else could I ask for? Why do I think it's the worst of the franchise? They went too far into James Bond silliness just a couple times. There's one or two sequences that are just dumb, as in True Lies / Last Action Hero action-parody territory. If they cut those 1-2 scenes out (1 minute's worth) the movie would have been fantastic. Does 60s seconds really hurt a 2 hour movie? For me it truly did. I prefer to watch realistic stressed-out banter between Willis and Jackson than cgi masquerading as a stunt. A very simple edit could have kept that/those scenes believable and cool instead of being a slap in the face to say "hi there, just remember that you are just watching a mind-numbing action fantasy.".
But again, 99% of the movie was good. They went all the way with this one...just too far for me.
