Review of Live by Night (2016) by Steven B — 15 Jan 2017
Once again it seems the critics do not like a Ben Affleck movie because it is a Ben Affleck movie. One negative review said something to the effect that Affleck was a great director and screen writer and a good actor.
This movie is directed by Affleck, the screen play is by Affleck, and Affleck stars in it, so go figure. This is not a great gangster movie, but it's pretty good. It is based on a Dennis Lehane novel.
Affleck has done two (3?) previous movies based on Lehane's work, it has that going for it. The story is excellent, the acting is for the most part good, and the filming is terrific. My only complaint would be that the first half hour or so is pretty slow and the relationships between the characters is not all that great.
But the rest of the movie moves along nicely, everything clicks. We enjoyed it and maybe you will. . .maybe not but there you go.
