Review of Live by Night (2016) by Tyler F — 16 Jan 2017
Ben Affleck does it again! One of the great things about Mr. Affleck is you can tell is passion for the story in his writing and retelling of a gem that is Live By Night the novel. That's what makes the movie great in my opinion. I read the book first, same with Gone Baby, Gone and when you watch it on the big screen, you can tell a real fan wrote the movie. Ben throws in his style of filming into the movie as well which seems to get better and tighter with every action sequence he directs. The story is a touching one, and Ben put the fan boy edge to it that another fan could really appreciate. I like the style he went with movie and the actors seemed to lock in the characters perfectly. To those who haven't read the book, you might not appreciate it as much. But all you need to do is sit back, read the undertones of the movie and enjoy the performances of the actors: which are spot on. Read the book if you're on the fence, and it might just break open you world and understand why I teared up when I saw "Daniel Caughlin's" name on the screen. You'll really get a kick out of it.
If you haven't read the book, and going in blind. Know that it's about a man trying to find a place where he fits in, makes a name for himself near the end of prohibition. All the crime and action to go with it, Live By Night shows heart where it's needed and coldblooded recourse when it doesn't. I liked this movie; both as a Ben Affleck fan and a Dennis Lehane fan. And if you want to know more about Ben's character Joe after the movie ends, check out "World Gone By.".
