Review of Live by Night (2016) by Lee H — 17 Jan 2017
Good, but not great. Live by Night is a decent gangster film set in the 1920's/30's but it just lacks something in the execution. It just feels fake, everything looks brand new or too polished - from the cars which look like they were taken from a heritage museum, to the clothing which just didn't look period accurate (Ben Affleck's suits look ginormous!).
The world being shown just didn't look lived in or real, which made the film feel a little fake. Also, there are some terrible Irish accents on show (Sienna Miller being the worst). The film is not all bad, the story is quite interesting and there's lots of good action set pieces, it's just not quite as good as it could have been.
3 stars out of 5.
