Review of Live and Let Die (1973) by Heath G — 16 Mar 2015
By far my favorite Bond film. Loved the humor, US locations especially capturing the flavor of New Orleans, and though Connery always receives the most praise, Roger Moore is excellent in his first entry. The voodoo theme was interesting and even quite funny due to the wacky appearances of Geoffrey Holder. Clifton James also added a comedic performance as the Sheriff during the boat chase scene on the bayous of southern Louisiana. Another classic and fun moment in the movie was when Bond jumped in a prop plane at a flight school, with a freaked out student awaiting her instructor along for the ride, as 007 tears up the plane in an on the ground chase scene. Hard to describe but trust me, one of the lighter moments in the film!
What made Live & Let Die a great entry was the use of unique scenery & tropical backdrop to bring to life the voodoo storyline, the successful integration of the "Blacksploitation" theme which was prevalent at the time, a good dose of tongue in cheek humor, and a solid performance by Moore, Yaphet Kotto, Holder, and Jane Seymour. Ive seen this film dozens of times & every time I see it listed, I watch it again. Still fun. And don't forget the classic title track from Paul McCartney (and later a decent cover by GNR). Don't miss this Bond film for a great mix of great locations including New Orleans, lots of action, subtle comedic elements, and a fun & interesting story that makes the film fly by! A cutting edge and memorable Bond flick!! Blows away all of the post Moore Bond entries, and one of the best overall.
