Review of Little Women (1994) by Angie M — 22 Jul 2009
Undoubtedly, the best part of the movie was the heartwarming dynamic in the March household, due in part to the amazing chemistry all five actresses (Sarandon, Ryder, Alvarado, Danes, and a cute-as-a-button Dunst) shared with each other. There were some good acting going on. Throw in a young and exuberant Christian Bale into the mix, and you have a pretty enjoyable first half that is equal parts dramatic and fun. The social commentary was also woven better. The introduction of the various romantic plots bogged down the second half. The sisters are mostly separate and that quite impeded the flow of the movie, as the romances aren't well developed and there wasn't lots of chemistry to be spared between the couples. Amy March seemed to have had a personality transplant. A lot of what should have been good, tearjerking scenes in the second half seemed rushed and ineffective.
The production quality is quite high; sets are beautiful and so are the costumes. Thomas Newman's music was a high point.
